A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
December 5, 2026
Hi Club Members,
I wanted to reach out and let our community of trail users and landowners know what has been going on. The Nor’Easters have been busy over the past few months with much-needed trail and bridge repairs. There is snow in the forecast and colder temperatures over the next couple of weeks, so we are hoping for an early opening compared to recent years.
Bridge Replacements
For a while now, we have had our eyes on several bridges that were getting old and starting to show signs of rot. Also, these old bridges were narrower than our current standard of 8’ width, so it was time to replace them.
We replaced three bridges on the Dunklee Pond trail, just east of where the trail crosses Rt 122 into Woodmont Orchard. Two of the bridges were swapped out for wider 8-foot versions, including upgrades to the foundational sleepers, while one smaller bridge was replaced with a culvert.
Over on Primary Trail PT501, where the trail crosses Hayden Rd into Monson, we replaced two narrow bridges – one with an 8’ wide bridge, and the other again with a culvert.
Trail Improvements
Keough Connector and Flatlanders Trail – Crews compacted the new trails with a vibratory roller, cleared brush, fixed wet spots, and re-routed a sharp corner.
Powerline Trail – We rebuilt the section of trail from Foster Rd crossing to the intersection with the East-West transmission lines. This involved extensive removal of rocks in the trail bed, building up low wet areas, and installing drainage to prevent problematic erosion. Once the rough grading was done, we added crushed gravel to complete the trail surface, compacted it, and then topped it with a three-inch layer of wood chips, which we also compacted using a vibratory roller.
Note on Project Funding – Funding from the New Hampshire Grant-in-Aid (GIA) program enabled the replacement of the bridges and the reconstruction of the Powerline trail. GIA receives its funding from snowmobile registration fees, and clubs apply to compete for financial support for their individual projects. However, the grant program requires clubs to fund a certain percentage of the total expenses. And this is where club membership comes into play. Your membership dollars are a major source of club funding, and trail maintenance and club equipment repair are the largest categories of expense we have. Membership directly influences the extent of trail maintenance and improvements we can achieve annually, and we sincerely appreciate the support provided by our members.
Get Involved!
In addition to financial resources, every year we count on volunteers to help us with routine trail and equipment maintenance and other events and activities. Whether trimming back side growth on trails, mowing trails and fields, helping with annual equipment maintenance or mid-season repairs (stuff always breaks at the worst time?), to helping with the Safety Class, Old Home Day Parade, selling (and buying) raffle tickets, volunteering to prepare for and participate in the Pink Ride – there are a multitude of ways you can get involved.
One key activity we need to finish ASAP is putting up trail crossing and stop signs. Watch our Facebook page for more information on this and other events.
Hope to see you on the trails soon!
